Kaibartta is Sanskrit word which means one who depends on water. In other words, Kaibartta is a community that earns its livelihood from the related occupation. According to anthropology the Kaibarttas belong to the Drividian origin. „Kalika Purana‟ a historical documents explains that the Kaibarttas were living in Kamrup even before the 17th century. According to the Bengali historian, Sevenanda Bharati the ancient home of Mahishya race or Kaibarttas is near the present day Ratnavati on the bank of Narmada. This was known as Mahishamati.
